Finally FO Friday

Thank goodness it is finally Friday.  The plan was that we’d already be enroute to Knittin’ at the Lake about now, but this week has been beyond hectic for Rosanne and for me, so we’re going to wait until it’s even colder tomorrow and head down.  As relaxing as it sounds, I still haven’t packed, have dishes sitting in the sink (remember the dead dishwasher?), and now have Gretchen and a double ear infection too.  (She’s fine.  It’s not serious, but due to her py-ederma, we’re being a little aggressive.)

Oh, but this did begin as a knitting blog, didn’t it?

First up, the Voyager Bliss Stole.

Pattern:  Voyager Lace Stole  Nice pattern.  I hope I linked to the version that has size options, because I actually downloaded the pattern from two different sources.  (See Ravelry.)  No changes, except I rarely count repeats; I knit until the length suits me, and then I stop.

New to me with this pattern was the provisional cast-on and this picot bind-off.   I never snapped a photo of the edging after I blocked it, but you get the idea.  Both are super-easy, basic knitting skills that have already seen use in other projects.

Yarn:  Sigh.  Debbie Bliss Silk Alpaca DK.  I’d used the aran weight version of this yarn, and I love it.  I have five balls left, so making something for me out of it isn’t out of the question.  (Gretchen the yarn snob likes it.)

Needles:  This is a bit embarassing, but I went through at least three different kinds of needles, trying to make this lace pattern and this very slickery yarn happy.  I started with metal needles, then tried Bryspun circs, and finally settled on palmwood straights.  (They rank right up there with rosewood for me, but either Gretchen has learned that needles are not chew toys, or palmwood doesn’t get her picky seal of chewability.)

Verdict:  It’s a tight race, between this and Spiralusious as my favorite project ever.  I’ve said this before, but there’s a synergistic effect when the perfect yarn meets a great pattern.  It’s a joy to knit, a joy to give or keep, and heck, a joy to just admire on Ravelry.   I hear the new owner and her cat are both enjoying it already, which delights me more than it should; I don’t know that I’ve ever knitted to suit a cat before!

In an effort to regain some control over my life, we’re going to play catch-up, so take a potty break, grab another beverage and a snack and keep reading!

I’ve already given you a sneak peak at Sissy’s cowl.

Pattern: Speedy Cabeled Cowl  really is speedy and quite nice!  I did knit in the round, eliminating one stitch from the cast on (and every other row, plus making the obvious changes to stay in pattern in the round), and I added another round of the 2×2 rib before binding off.  It was my first attempt at cables without a cable needle.  Worked like a charm, and made me like cables a bit more because it’s not so belabored.

Needles:  Knitpick Options #13 US.

Yarn:  Lion Brand Woolease Thick & Quick in denim.  A bit splitty, and I missed that merino “sproing”, but it’s a pretty color and Sissy likes it just fine.

Verdict:  I think I’ll be making one for me in Malabrigo Chunky.  Might have to make one for Sissy in a purple bulky yarn, because the dog won’t wear sweaters, but she really is crazy about her cowl and actually wants to wear it, especially at night.

So, what does your weekend hold?  I’ll be getting my kitchen in order – with or without the new dishwasher that doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to arrive – and packing tonight.  Tomorrow, I’ll brave the cold for the few feet from my front door to Rosanne’s car door, and then we’ll be Knittin’ at the Lake.  Sunday, I plan to come home and just allow the fur-girls to harass me all evening, and then turn in early.  Next week, I don’t think I have a single meeting, but the last week of the month has meetings on Tuesday & Wednesday nights, I do believe…

What’s on your weekend agenda?

Is the stole pale blue? It’s very pretty. Maybe I’ll make up cowls for Samba and Morgan while I decide on the next big project.

My weekend involves being all alone (well, except for The Wild One and the two sleeping lumps), since the DTE headed back to school today and Hubband headed of to Florida for a conference. So, knitting, putting dogs in and out, reminding myself to eat, more knitting, and of course, reading! I will actually get dressed for church and do a bit of cooking for the pot-luck. But I have a second sock to make, so, knitting.

Thank you for you kind words. It still hurts, losing Arwin – and it’s going to hurt for a long time.

I ordered some yarn tonight that reminded me of her, and I plan on making a scarf in her memory.
