Walking into 2012

Happy Thorsday, little friday, Thankful Thursday and nearly the end of 2011.  Thank you for all of the support offered up for Hope’s family yesterday.  I know they appreciate it.   A special note of thanks to each of you who shared very personal experiences with me.   I value our friendships and truly can’t express how much your support means.

Could I be a good race-walker? Probably not, but I wanna' try!

Gretchen has a great post from her perspective on 2011, but I’ll get to my own look back eventually…   In the meantime, I’m hoping some of you can help.  gMarie and a local friend of hers are planning to do a 5K every month.  My sister asked me to do a 10K with her in March.  While poking around this morning, I discovered that the local 5K on Saturday is dog-friend.  After the Yappy Hour debaucle, I’m thinking maybe Sissy would like to “race” with other dogs and their owners?

Anyway, my question is…  are most races open to walkers?  Anyone else doing  a race every month?  Where can I find them?  I don’t need advice on training… I ran cross country in high school and have done several 10-mile walks over the years.  I just need to know how to find walker and possibly dog friendly events.

What are you thankful for today?

I have a daughter-in-law who walks every 5k and 10k she can find. No one has ever turned her away. I hate to admit it but she walks faster than I run.

Coming up on the end of the year and beginning a fresh new one, I am so thankful for you, Chan, and all the other knitting, pet loving bloggers who are a bright spot in every day!! Thanks to you and all of them for sharing the year with me.

Sorry…don’t know about any 5k/10ks. Slug that I am.

Thankful that I have finished a MASSIVE amount of work since returning from vacay (no one does my work when I am away). Of course, it should be my agency that is thankful, but that isn’t happening, so I will just be glad that I still have the faculties to get the job done.

First – I always read comments ahead of me and I’m so glad others are listing their thankfuls.

Second – google. That’s how we find ours. Then once you sign up for one – you’ll be on their email list and you’ll get notice of all future walks. Around here, the ‘races’ have different categories you can sign up for – fast runner, slow runner, timed walker, or just walker. We generally sign up for timed walker or slow runner so we can be timed.

Today I’m thankful for work stress starting to go away. For bosses who actually appreciate what I do during the day – even when it feels like nothing. For a husband who loves me – even when he can’t act like it. For Dogs – their love is amazing. For friends – near and far who love, support and lift me up.

for leaving my comment as me and not the dog 😉

Around here a lot of charities offer walks and most are dog friendly. Try Alzheimers, Cancer Society and others. Also some shelters sponsor walks.

I love to walk, but with the joint degeneration in my foot, I think a long walk like that is out.

  7. I know nothing re walkings runs except what I hear from others…which is that one CAN walk if they choose. Thankful for….each new day and the experiences and opportunities they bring.

I know most of the charitable 5-K’s around here are walk/trot/run as you please and it’s more about the fun and fundraising than the “race” per say. I’d like to walk one with one of the furkids this year…

  9. Marjie says:

I don’t walk/run. I figure chasing the chores around here should be enough. Plus, if I walk down my own driveway and then back up, it’s a mile, and that’s more exercise than I think I should need….so, yes, I’m another lazy slug friend of yours.

Thankful? Good health, great house, nice life, great hubby and kids…what else is there?

  10. Kathy says:

Google! Google something like 5k and the name of the city you are looking for the race. Vast majority are walker-friendly but due to insurance purposes aren’t dog-friendly.

  11. Blond Duck says:

All the 5-Ks we’ve done we’ve walked. They’re really nice!

Thankful that I made it through another year, and didn’t lose my mind. 🙂

I need to get going on my end-of-the-year blog post … since I’m working on New Year’s Eve.

I have yet to see a race that was not open to walkers…to include marathons. A lot of them are dog friendly, but check the website, and with race organizers to be sure. some are specifically for dog walkers. it definitely varies, race to race.
